Are smartphone dashboard camera apps an alternate to physical dashcams? We test cardinal to ascertain
Fancy getting a dash Cam River? Asymptomatic, you could already have one in your pocket, because there are now pot of apps that will turn your smartphone into an in-car camera, and near of them are free to download.
Retrieving television footage from a phone is pleasing, too, but thither are a couple of downsides. First, you'll need a solid mounting that doesn't haze over the lens. Also mind that the cameras along most smartphones won't beryllium able to capture as much in a frame as a dash cam, plus they use a lot of power, and could even make the sound overheat and shut down.
• Incomparable dash cams
Since our last test two days ago there has been a shake-up among the apps, with many we rated no longer available. So which is now the best app to keep an eye on your journey? We downloaded 8 to find unfashionable.
How we well-tried them
Using an iPhone X, we checkered how easy IT was to use the app and whether the instructions made it simple to operate. We so looked at the choice of the footage in daytime and at night, and tried taboo whatever extra features that increased the app, much as GPS information, road-sign realization or speed information. Finally, all the apps were free to download, so we looked at the cost of going anno Domini-gratis or upgrading.
Finding of fact
These apps are a compromise compared with a dedicated dash cam, merely they could be handy if you just want to habituate one occasionally. None is perfect but they are free, so we'd advise downloading unmatched and seeing if IT works for you. Start with the RoadAR Smart Dashcam: it's a good all-rounder, but the instant-placed Navmii is tight if you don't need GPS data.

Reviews
RoadAR Intelligent Dashcam - Best buy
Price: Free (£1.99 to upgrade)Rating: 5 starsAvailable on: Android, iOS
Once you get past the badly translated instructions, this app seems to make it altogether. It recognises traffic signs, has impact detection and a GPS stereotype. It has stop number-tv camera warnings, excessively, although these depend on a meshwork of users to upload the locations, and it didn't know about several we passed.
The video select is good, though, and the files are coded with the time and positioning. There are no ads, either, thus while you butt pay to upgrade, there's little incentive to Doctor of Osteopathy so.
Navmii Bradypus tridactylus Dashcam - Recommended
Price: GratuitousRating: 4 starsAvailable on: Android, iOS
If you are non excessively disquieted about having GPS location information on your dash Cam, the Navmii industrial plant really well. It has extremity settings for declaration and impact detection, although it was fine for our test in the 'default' mode, with no false alarms over potholes.
The app will also agnise and display speed-confine signs. All the same, the footage is a little wobbly, especially at Nox. You tooshie't use the phone in portraiture mode either, so make surely you're happy in landscape painting but.
Smart Dashcam Pro
Price: Free (ad-free approx 80p/calendar month)Military rating: 3 starsAvailable on: Android, iOS
The big selling point of this app is that it only records footage if the sensors in your phone detect an 'incident', saving you from storing hours of television for no reason.
The system also turns sour the screen to save power later a few seconds, patc the consequent footage is acceptable once you've calibrated the settings. The app is funded by streamer ads connected the screen, but you can get rid of them by subscribing for $0.99/month (about 80p). That would make it pricey over the unsound terminus, though.
Automobile Cam River
Price: Free (£1.99 to upgrade)Rating: 3 starsAvailable on: iOS
This app is same basic, with zero GPS tracking or speed information – just the footage, date and time. The biggest advantage to this is battery life; with only the camera squirting, it's not almost sol heavy connected the power usage. The app will work with either the front or rear camera on your earphone, and in portrait or landscape mode.
The quality of the footage is good too, and you can banish the small adverts on the screen by gainful a one-off fee of £1.99. This app is nothing especially special, but it doesn't genuinely do anything wrong either.
Aviva Drive
Mary Leontyne Pric: FreeRating: 3 starsObtainable on: Humanoid, iOS
Aviva designed this app for its customers, only it lavatory be used by anyone. It measures the elbow room you labour finished 200 miles and, if the electronics call back you are a off the hook device driver, it leave offer you a dismiss on your agio. Once you are insured, the well-stacked-in style cam (with impact sleuthing) can be used to musical accompaniment any insurance policy claims. It's perfect if you want a discount or a hassle-free claim, but it's a jolly radical camera app.
IPCCamsoft Shrewd Dash CAM
Mary Leontyne Pric: FreeRating: 2 starsPurchasable on: Android, iOS
This app promises respective key features, but the menus come along blank along the set-up page and you pot't get back once it's loaded, so we couldn't enable and tailor approximately of the things IT privy do. It did an okay job, but the image was a piddling hazy, especially at night.
It's free to download and use, simply funded aside distracting ads at the base of the screen.
Dashcam 2
Toll: FreeValuation: 2 starsAvailable on: iOS
Unusually this app hasn't been updated since our last test. But it doesn't feel also erstwhile; IT still looks sleek down, with Google Map incorporation on the screen and the ability to record from the front operating room rear cameras. Clips are saved in a closed circuit with a location, and so they're easy to distinguish. You can even film in super high-tone 4K. But with no image stabilisation, the video from rougher roadstead, especially at night, is almost unuseable.
Dashcam – Motorcar Crash Recorder
Price: Free (£4.99 ad-free)Valuation: 2 starsAvailable on: iOS
We got frustrated with this app, despite some neat features. The film is simply saved in 720p and we had to calibrate the impact sensors. Less easy to fix were the messages interrogative us to rate the app Beaver State advance to the paid adaptation every few seconds. They made it almost unusable, and we'd gestate a taster before being given the hard sell.
